Voyageur Brand Story – Illex Squid

The Alligator that Led Us to the Squid

What do a Louisiana alligator farmer, the Boston Seafood Show, and Kaohsiung, Taiwan have in common? At the Boston Seafood Show in the 1980s, a chance meeting with an Alligator farmer based in Louisiana connected us with an Illex squid-distributing family located in Kaoshiung, Taiwan.

Specializing in the Argentine Illex and the Peruvian-Chilean Gigas, we’re able to access some of the highest quality large squid species through our South American supplier. Sea-frozen for optimal freshness, they’re shipped back to Kaoshiung, Taiwan, where they’re re-packed and exported worldwide. The Alligator farmer has since retired, but our 40-year relationship with the squid producers remains strong to this day.

Voyageur Brand Story – Shrimp

A Passage to India via Shrimp

For years, Thailand has been a leading producer of high-quality shrimp. India has recently entered the shrimp market with intriguing products that compete with the best the world has to offer. In recent decades, aquaculture has been booming in the southeastern region of Andhra Pradesh. With this thriving industry, India has now surpassed Thailand in global production.

Impressed with the quality of the Indian shrimp products, we travelled there to establish a dedicated supply partnership of our own. Because quality assurance is a top priority, we require a third-party inspection at the source. Today, we work with the same two processing facilities for all of our shrimp imports into Canada, helping ensure consistency and giving our customers confidence that every order meets the Voyageur standard.

Voyageur Brand Story – Loligo Squid

From Spring Rolls to Tzatziki

Who knew that a spring roll wrapper supplier would lead us to the fried calamari you enjoy at Greek restaurants? Today, Canadian chefs have access to an abundance of seafood options from around the world, making it hard to imagine a time when those options were limited. Rewind to the 1990s, while China was already producing world-class seafood, navigating cultural and business differences made importing a challenge.

To help us navigate our way through the various suppliers, we reached out to a trusted contact who introduced us to a distributor of spring roll wrappers. Yes, spring rolls. That introduction led us to our Loligo squid producer in Shantou, a partnership that remains strong to this day. Prized for its exceptional tenderness (uncommon in most squid), Loligo squid is the perfect choice for the calamari dishes Canadians have come to love.

Voyageur Brand Story – Scallops

East Meets West, Bacon Meets Scallops

When we were seeking a facility that could process our non-kosher products, we had no idea the search would lead us to prized Japanese scallops from Hokkaido. Through a sister company of the facility we partnered with in Richmond, BC, we were introduced to a global scallop producer in Asia—and our bacon-wrapped scallops were born.

Hand-rolled and finished locally, they are a true Canadian product made with imported and domestic ingredients. Combining premium Japanese scallops with local Canadian bacon, they represent a delicious international fusion born from a successful partnership close to home.

Our Partners

Our partner network takes us further. By working directly with international producers, we bring products into Canada as the first importer. Through our rigorous logistics, traceability, and inspection programs, we ensure our seafood suppliers meet the highest standards.

FAQ

Find answers to commonly asked questions about Voyageur products, including sourcing, sustainability, storage, and quality standards.

Our products are sourced from both wild and farmed producers. We only purchase responsibly caught, harvested, and/or sustainable seafood for the Canadian market. The aquaculture producers we work with maintain high farming standards and participate in recognized certification programs, including BAP and ASC.

Sustainable seafood shouldn’t be complicated. With so many certifications and claims on packaging, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. That’s why our approach is built on transparency.

We carefully vet every partner to ensure they meet our standards for quality, integrity, and responsible practices. When it comes to sustainability, we work with organizations that rely on science-based standards and independent third-party audits. Whether a product carries a sustainability certification or not, our focus remains on responsible sourcing, accountability, and long-term stewardship.

It’s simplified sustainability that works for the environment and our customers. For more information on our commitment to stewardship and sustainability, email us your specific questions at info@oceanfoods.com.

Yes, all Voyageur seafood products are frozen. Freezing helps preserve freshness, quality, and food safety from the point of harvest through to delivery.

Why frozen?

Freshness: Freezing locks in natural flavour, texture, and aroma.

Safety: It helps maintain high food safety standards and reduces the risk of contamination.

Quality: Proper freezing preserves nutritional value and ensures a consistent product experience once thawed.
